Your Life Depends on This: What most people miss after an injury
Introduction
Imagine a world where everything stands still. The trees don’t sway. The birds don’t fly. Life, as we know it, would cease to exist. Now imagine your body that way. In today's post, we’ll guide you on why movement is essential to life.
When Injury Becomes a Problem
Movement is not just about walking, running, or exercising–it’s at the core of what it means to be alive. It is the currency of life, often undervalued until it is taken away. Often, it isn’t until people experience an injury that they truly understand the importance of movement. The body hurts, so we pause. But here's the truth: prolonged stillness does more harm than good. When a joint or muscle isn’t used for a while, it begins to tighten–leading to a limited range of motion. Hence, resulting in limited range of motion. In this scenario, areas where you got injured, maybe you broke or sprained your arm, bent your knee awkwardly, or now struggle to turn your neck due to pain–it all becomes harder. This is usually as a result of pain while moving the affected part. Think about it. You have experienced it before, but it wasn't really a big deal because the issue wasn't serious. Some others also forget to move after the affected part being on a cast for weeks. Hence, if you know or are one, ensure that immediately after the cast is removed, consult a Physiotherapist.
Restoring Movement After Injury
Following an injury, and now that the cast is off or the pain has eased, most times, we would want to start doing the things we previously did. But it is wrong, or almost impossible. Why? Because the body needs help to remember how to move–and here is where physiotherapy is needed. Your muscles may be weak. Your joints may be stiff. Your balance may feel off. That’s normal, and it's possible for you to be as fit as you were initially.
Here are some key steps to begin restoring movement. We’ll touch on them briefly here, and explore each one fully in our upcoming DIY post.
Reintroduce Gentle Movement
Retrain the Brain-Body Connection
Build Strength Slowly
Be Patient with the Process: Physiotherapy is not a one day activity, so don't expect to be perfectly fine upon the first treatment session. It is a continuous activity that helps an individual keep fit.
Final Thoughts
Injury might interrupt movement–but it doesn’t have to steal it or leave you deformed. With the right guidance and pace, your body can regain strength, range, and confidence. Whether you’re recovering from a fracture, sprain, or post-surgery stiffness, the message remains the same: don’t stop moving–just move with intention.
And remember, you’re not alone. As physiotherapists, we are here to guide you through every stage of your recovery journey.
